An original, Joseph Fitter Victorian mahogany wind-out dining table. It dates from the 1870s and extends by use of a worm gear & crank handle mechanism - which bears the Fitter brass trade plate. This table has rounded table edges, four elegant turned reeded legs and original brass and ceramic castors. Seats four comfortably at its regular width, once extended, with the two spare extension leaves, the table sits six.
In good used condition, it has been sourced from a country estate, and been passed down for generations. It was painted by the previous owners and the table top wood was stained ebony. The castors have now been polished and the mechanism oiled ready for its new home. The table top does show small signs of wear.
History, a winding mechanism for extending tables was patented in 1861 by Samuel Hawkins. His business was taken over by Joseph Fitter in 1864 who ran a machinist shop in Birmingham, England. He produced winding mechanisms for expanding tables.
Set includes:
2x extension leaves
1x crank handle
Measurments: (height) 73cm (width) 113cm (length) 129cm (extended length) 193cm
Table underside to floor (height) 58cm, please bear this in mind for dining chairs. This table comes pre-assembled, (extension leaves seperatly packaged).
